Poetry Month

April is National Poetry Month, a time to honor the role that poets play in our culture and underline the importance of poetry. Poetry gives us a glimpse into other's thoughts and feelings, and increases empathy by enabling us to get a new perspective on the human experience.

Launched by the Academy of American Poets in April 1996, National Poetry Month celebrates poets’ and poetry's integral role in our culture. Over the years, tens of millions of readers, students, K–12 teachers, librarians, booksellers, literary events curators, publishers, families, and—of course—poets, have marked this month and important place poetry holds in our lives.
