Elementary or secondary schools that are operated by a nonprofit board under a contractual arrangement with a public university, community college, intermediate school district or local school district. Charter schools can operate any combination of grades from kindergarten through twelfth grade, can specialize in a specific subject area or approach, may be required to meet specialized accountability standards and/or to abide by the same laws and regulations that govern public schools, and cannot charge tuition.
