A federally-funded program administered by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), previously known as the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA), that provides hospital and medical insurance for people age sixty-five and older; for disabled individuals younger than age sixty-five who have been entitled to Social Security Disability benefits for at least twenty-four consecutive months; and for insured workers and their dependents who have end stage renal disease and need dialysis or a kidney transplant.
