| Description: | Veterans' courts are hybrid drug and mental health courts that use the drug court model to serve veterans struggling with addiction, serious mental illness and/or co-occurring disorders. They promote sobriety, recovery and stability through a coordinated response that involves cooperation and collaboration between the county's Superior Court, Public Defender's Office, Veteran's Affairs Office, Probation Department and local volunteers. We are unique in that our DA, Public Defender and Probation reps are all veterans, working with our Veteran Peer Support Team. Program participants can have their charges dismissed in minor cases or reduced in serious cases once they complete programs to cope with substance abuse, anger management or post- traumatic stress disorder. Many veterans are entitled to treatment through the Veterans' Administration and veterans treatment courts help connect them with these benefits. ELIGIBILITY: veterans facing criminal charges no matter how long they served, whether or not they served in combat or how they were discharged. |
